Lip taping to help train to breathe through the nose instead of the mouth.

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

The U.S Sun published an article announcing:

“World No1 Iga Swiatek baffles tennis fans as she plays with TAPE over her mouth… “

Breathing through the nose instead of the mouth can have several benefits in terms of maintaining a higher energy level and staying more focused[1][2]. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Improved oxygen intake: When breathing through the nose, the air is filtered, heated, and humidified before it enters the body, which helps optimize the oxygen intake[2].

  2. Increased oxygenation: Nasal breathing allows the body to receive more oxygen as compared to mouth breathing[1]. It has been found that breathing through the nose can increase the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues and cells by an average of 10% more than mouth breathing[3].

  3. Enhanced nitric oxide production: Nasal breathing stimulates the production of nitric oxide, which is an important vasodilator and helps improve circulation and oxygen delivery to the muscles and organs[3].

  4. Better energy levels: Nasal breathing helps in maintaining a balanced nervous system, reducing performance anxiety, and oxidative stress[4]. This can lead to higher energy levels and improved stamina.

These are just a few reasons why training oneself to breathe through the nose instead of the mouth can have benefits in terms of energy levels and focus. It's important to note that individual experiences may vary, and it is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

Here are my favorite lip tapes. Warning: Please lip tate during the day only!!! If you have been cleared by your ENT & they said it was ok to use lip tape during sleep you may. Otherwise, only use it for short period of time during the day to retrain your body to nasal breathe.

VIO2 Lip Tape:

My favorite one, Why? Because as a previous mouth breather I used to get panic attacks when using too bulky of a lip tape such as 3M tape(see last one on the list)...this one feels comfortable & if I want to open my mouth I am able to.

Dryft Sleep Lip Tape:

This one was comfortable, however it does have a hole in the middle, which was surprising to me, for first time lip tape users this is good as well.

Simply breathe Lip tape:

This one was comfortable as well, great for sensitive skin and beards.

3M medical tape (they also have 3M sensitive tape which is more comfortable):

Very Bulky!!!! It was uncomfortable & scary for me to use at first. However, right now since I am more comfortable using my nose for breathing rather than mouth, i can wear this one freely. This is more affordable option.
